01 About Tutor-For-All
What is Tutor-For-All?
A student-led nonprofit that gives children around the world free, one-on-one, online math and reading tutoring for kindergarten through 5th-grade students from low-income families. Our tutors are high school and college student volunteers.
Who started it?
Students at Carnegie Vanguard High School in Houston, Texas. We saw elementary kids falling behind because their families couldn't afford private tutoring, which often costs $40 to $80 an hour, and decided to do something about it.
Is it really free?
Yes. Families never pay anything: no sign-up fee, no session fees, no materials to buy, now or later. Tutors are volunteers, and our small costs (books, learning tools, outreach) are covered by donations.
Where do you operate?
Worldwide. Every session happens online, so we match tutors and families across countries and time zones. Both sign-up forms ask for your country and time zone. We were founded by students in Houston, Texas.
How can I contact you?
Email tutorforallnonprofit@gmail.com or message us on Instagram @tutorforallorg. A real person on our student team will reply.
02 For parents & guardians
Who can sign up?
Students in kindergarten through 5th grade from low-income households. The program is reserved for families who can't access paid tutoring.
Can you work with children who have learning disabilities or special needs?
Unfortunately, no. Our tutors are high school and college student volunteers, not trained teachers or special education specialists, so we can't accommodate learning disabilities, developmental or behavioral conditions, or other needs that call for specialized instruction. We'd encourage you to ask your child's school about support services.
How do you decide if we qualify?
The sign-up form asks a few short, confidential questions: whether your child gets free or reduced-price school lunch, your approximate household income range, and whether your household receives assistance such as SNAP, Medicaid/CHIP, WIC, TANF or housing assistance. We use the answers only to make sure our limited spots go to the families who need them most.
I'm not sure we qualify. Should I still apply?
Yes. Fill out the form, or email tutorforallnonprofit@gmail.com first if you'd rather ask. We'd rather hear from you than have you miss out.
Which subjects do you teach?
Math and reading/ELA, or both. In math that runs from counting and shapes in kindergarten to fractions, decimals and early algebraic thinking in 5th grade. In reading it runs from phonics and letter sounds to comprehension and vocabulary. See the full grade-by-grade list.
How do I sign up?
Fill out the student sign-up form. It takes about five minutes and asks about your child, your contact details, the times that work for you, and a few eligibility questions.
How long until we hear back?
We review every request and reach out within 3–5 school days, by email or phone, whichever you prefer. We may ask a short follow-up question.
How do you choose my child's tutor?
We match by grade level, subjects, and the times you're both available. If your child is learning English, we match them with a tutor who speaks their home language. You can also ask for a male or female tutor. Either one can mean a longer wait.
My child is learning English. Can you help?
Yes. The form asks whether your child is an English Language Learner and which language they're most comfortable speaking. We match them with a tutor who speaks that language, which can take longer.
How long will my child get tutoring?
As long as they need it. Some families want help for a few weeks, others for a semester or a full school year. The form asks for your best estimate, and you're not locked in.
Do I need to pay for books or materials?
No. Nothing to buy. We also give away donated children's books to the students we serve.
A tutor referred me. Does that matter?
There's an optional question on the form for the name of the Tutor-For-All tutor who referred you. It helps us credit them for spreading the word.
03 Sessions, safety & technology
How do sessions work?
One tutor and one student, online over Zoom or Google Meet, for about an hour. Tutors plan around your child's grade level and the specific skills they need help with, including anything you tell us they're struggling with on the sign-up form.
Are sessions ever in person?
No. Every session is online, so no one comes to your home and you don't need to drive anywhere.
Who are the tutors?
High school and college students with strong grades: at least a 3.5 unweighted GPA and a 90 or above in the subject they teach. Every tutor is reviewed by our team before being accepted.
How do you keep my child safe?
Before a tutor is matched with anyone, they complete our onboarding, which includes training on how sessions work and how we keep students safe, and they agree to our Code of Conduct. Our team also meets each new tutor on a short video call, or reviews a short video from them, before they're matched. Sessions are online only, and parents and guardians are always welcome to watch.
Can I watch the sessions?
Please do. A parent or guardian is welcome, and encouraged, to sit in on any session from the same room.
What equipment does my child need?
An internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone, ideally a laptop or tablet. If you only have a phone, or your connection is unreliable, say so on the form. We still want to hear from you.
How does scheduling work across time zones?
On the form, pick the hours that work in your own local time. Don't convert anything; we handle it. Checking two hours in a row (for example 4–5pm and 5–6pm) helps a lot, because clocks change on different dates in different countries and a session can shift by an hour.
What if we need to miss or move a session?
Email us at tutorforallnonprofit@gmail.com as early as you can and we'll help sort it out.
What happens to our information?
We use it only to check eligibility, match your child with a tutor, and contact you about scheduling. We never share your family's information with anyone outside Tutor-For-All.
04 For tutors
Who can become a tutor?
High school students (grades 9–12) and college or university students. You need at least a 3.5 unweighted GPA, a 90 or above in the subject you want to tutor, reliable internet and a device, and one to two hours a week.
Can college students apply?
Yes. College and university students are welcome on the same terms as high schoolers. Choose “College / University” as your year on the application.
I live outside the U.S. Can I tutor?
Yes. Sessions are online, so you can tutor from any time zone. The application asks for your country and time zone, and you list your availability in your own local time.
How exactly do the grade requirements work?
To tutor math, you need a 90 or above in your current or most recent math course. To tutor reading, the same in English/ELA. To tutor both, we look at both. On top of that, you need at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 unweighted scale.
I'm just below the requirements. Should I apply?
Yes. If you're close, apply anyway. We review every application individually. If it's not a yes this time, you're welcome to apply again next semester.
Will you check my grades?
Yes, we may verify your academic qualifications. The application includes an electronic signature confirming your grades are accurate, and misrepresenting them means removal from the program. You also agree to keep meeting the minimum standards while you tutor.
What happens after I apply?
We review your application and reach out within 3–5 school days. If accepted, you'll get a link to our onboarding: a training video, ten questions on how sessions work and how we keep students safe, our Code of Conduct, and your availability. It takes about 40 minutes on your own schedule (the video is about 27 minutes). Then you drop in for a quick ten-minute hello video call with our team, or send us a short video if the call times don't work, and we match you with a student.
How much time does it take?
At least one to two hours a week, scheduled around your availability. Sessions are about an hour each. Consistency matters more than volume: your student is counting on you.
Do I need tutoring experience?
No. Strong grades, patience and reliability matter most. Onboarding covers how sessions work. If you do have experience, mention it on the application.
Can I tutor in a language other than English?
If you speak another language, tell us on the application. Some of our students are English learners, and if you're comfortable, we may match you with a child who speaks your language.
Can I get a reference letter?
Yes. Tutors can request a reference letter from our team for internships, jobs, scholarships, or college applications.
05 Volunteer hours
How many hours do I earn?
One verified hour per tutoring session, two hours for each tutor you refer, and thirty minutes for each family you refer, once the referral is verified.
What can I use my hours for?
Hours are verified by the Tutor-For-All team and can be used for NHS requirements, graduation requirements, IB/AP or college service-learning, scholarship applications, and college or job applications. Check your school's or program's own rules for what they accept.
How do I log my hours?
Submit the volunteer hour log within 3 days of every session, and after any other qualifying activity: one submission per session. If a session has no log, we'll email you to ask what happened.
Why weren't my hours verified?
The most common reason is inconsistent entries. Type your full name and your school's name exactly the same way every time, with no nicknames or abbreviations. If something still looks wrong, email tutorforallnonprofit@gmail.com.
When do referral hours count?
For a tutor referral (2 hours), the person you referred must name you on their application, be accepted, finish onboarding, and tutor at least one verified session. For a family referral (30 minutes), the family must name you on their sign-up form, and the student must complete their first session.
06 Donating
How can I donate?
Give money securely through PayPal (you can pay by card without a PayPal account), or donate books and school supplies through our donation form, and we'll arrange drop-off or pickup.
Where does the money go?
We have no paid staff. Donations go roughly 65% to educational materials and books, 20% to technology and learning tools, and 15% to outreach and program operations.
What books and supplies do you accept?
Children's books, workbooks, pencils, notebooks and other school supplies. See the full list of accepted donations.
Can my organization partner with you?
We'd love that. Bookstores and book nonprofits have already helped us. Email tutorforallnonprofit@gmail.com to talk.
